Horrid.

Long, tedious, disturbing and a sorry excuse for a musical. Horrid
music, horrid acting, and disturbing characters, or actors or things. I
think the true essence of Hollywood comes through here; talentless,
hideous non-entities paraded through an absurd series of events. Can't
believe that the man who directed Gold Diggers of 1933 (Busky Berkley)
also directed this tripe. What more can one do with a horrid script
such as that.

Funny review ! I'm watching it now ! Remember it's 1937 ! I love Glenda Farrell. She's adorable.

I'm enjoying it so far! It's meant to be a silly, over-the-top spoof of Hollywood at the time, but it's pretty realistic and holds up pretty well. The script is zippy, with fast dialogue and an actual plot.

I'm sure the high point was "Hooray for Hollywood," but still, considering this doesn't have a great reputation even as a Busby Berkeley film, there's a lot to recommend it. Not what you'd call a classic, but more enjoyable and timeless than many films that are regarded as classics.

De gustibus non disputandum est, or there's no accounting for taste. I loved it and it has one of the greatest openings ever. Sad to see Ted Healy in almost his last movie, the guy really was a comic genius.

Didn't like it, eh? Well, I admit to losig patienc and fast forwarding bits.

Who was the vocalist with the Goodman crew? I found him oddly annoying to watch.

reply

That is Johnnie "Scat" Davis. His version of "Hooray for Hollywood" with Benny Goodman and His Orchestra in this movie is classic.
