The Commodore's servility

I don't buy it. Here was a man who had worked his way up to the top after probably 40 years at sea, made a very nice salary and was close to retirement. He knew very well he would be blamed if the ship hit an iceberg and his reputation ruined. I find it hard to believe he ignored his every instinct to slow down just to appease the boss.
