Heidi's name

I watched this movie a long time ago so I don't remember if such a scene was in it but in the book there was one in which someone asks Heidi what her name is and getting the answer "Heidi", she questions if the girl was baptized because Heidi isn't a Christian name. Does it mean Heidi isn't a typical shortened version of Adelheid? Because it's like asking someone what their name is and being surprised that their name can be Cathy, Dave or Tommy - everybody knows these are short for Catherine, David and Thomas but that person from the novel didn't know the Heidi version, is it an uncommon version of Heidi's full name?

Yes, the scene was in the movie where Fraulein (probably spelled that wrong) Rottenmeyer asks Heidi what her name is, she replies, "Heidi". She then claims that that's ridiculous and asks for her real name.

I did some searching, and she wants to know because "Heidi" is a nickname for girls named Adelheide. Being the uptight woman that she is, Rottenmeyer asks for her full name, most likely, because she sees nicknames as innappropriate.

Ah, thank you, I took it literally, thinking that for some reasons she REALLY didn't know this. Btw, speaking of naames, if you are an English native speaker, are you able to answer this question of mine too? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115157/board/nest/170408289?d=170408289#1 70408289

In the 1937 film, when she is asked if her real given name is "Heidi," she says her name is Adelheid. Heide is the affectionate diminutive of Adelheid (in English, Adelaide), which means "nobility" or "of noble birth."

If you can remember the '60s, then you weren't there.
