Started out comedy but ended in somber drama - a lot like love itself?

I really enjoyed the start of the movie, what with the playful banter between Gabin's character ("The Ladykiller") and just about everybody he came into contact with. But as the movie progressed, it suddenly took on a much darker and somber tone, and ended in... well, I'll let you watch and decide for yourself. It's probably as good a reflection of how real love often unfolds in real life, but... I think another lighter, more "comedic" retelling of this story would be fun to watch, too.

BTW, Jean Gabin reminded me of a young Spencer Tracy.
