Love the film, but Ruth is too glamorous

Ruth Manson does not look like she lives on a remote island with no hairdresser and cosmetician.

But a lovely and haunting movie nonetheless, with a great cast.

Am inclined to agree there, but did not mind too much. Very pretty, except for the eye brows

I saw this today and I have to say this is being very picky. It wasn't like they didn't have access to things with others going back & forth on the various ships & trawlers. They weren't completely isolated. I can understand her looks better than a film taking place on a island with no vistors or ships and the women still looking like her. Did anyone notice the men all had suites and ties on for
church except the guy that loved her and left the island and her brother who bought her dresses back?

The less you are in the sun the less you wrinkle. Cosmetics can ruin a woman's complexion.

The oddest thing is that John Laurie was only 13 years older than Belle Chrystall, the actress who played his daughter Ruth.

I came to the discussion board specifically because of Ruth Manson's improbable coiffure and makeup. It really jumps out at me. Especially when the baby needs a doctor, and residents are stranded so long by the weather. Then she'a aboard ship after having worn a wool cap in the rain, but her hair is still perfect. It's like she's in an MGM movie cut into a documentary.

Otherwise this is a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable movie. I'm glad to have visited "Hirta" without having to endure what the film crew did - much less the residents of such places.
