John Beal's comic chops:

I just looked up Beal's IMDb page - I couldn't place him. He had a long and fine career, but almost nothing there suggests he got any dividends from the screwball comedy gold he mines here as Waldo - like the dimmer little brother Ralph Bellamy never had. There's so much to like in this movie, including lots of sneaky dialogue, the breeziness around a divorce that makes lots of characters very happy, and the Swiss-timepiece perfection of Powell and Loy's sparring. Waldo finding his yumpf is the icing on this sweet fluffy cake.

Perfect! I'm watching the movie, and Beal is so good that I had to look him up. It's great to see that someone else was moved to praise him.

"All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people."

oh I totally agree ... John Beal was a revelation as Waldo... his scenes with the fabulous Bill Powell are a delight!!!

A pity Hollywood seems to have not used his comic skills more.

Waldo seemed a bit of a Jimmy Stewart type, but without the strong backbone.
