Dead End [ Alley scene]

Watch the scene as Bogie see's his lost love for the first time in years. As she approaches she is seen in soft focus as through his memory of her and his love for what might have been. Then look carefully as she steps into the streetlight, and he see's the reality,as she appears cheap, tough and tired. Bogies revultion is tempered with sadness and a sense of loss of a long held dream. This is great cinema!

That's my favorite scene from the movie. I love the look on Bogey's face when he first realizes Francey is a prostitute. The great thing- they never mention what she does for a living.

I guess in the play it is more specific. Francie is a prostitute and has sphyllis. I love that scene, tho

nice socks, man.....

This look and a look in Casablanca are two great scenes done by a great actor. In Casblanca it is when Rick hears Sam playing "As Time Goes By". He goes to tell Sam to stop playing, then sees Ilsa and stops, stops with the horror of a man who has his heart torn out once and fears it will happen again. Done without a word spoken. A great actor.

way too realistic in characters and their reactions for modern day writers with their "my sadist can outdo your sadist" stereotypes. How sad that there are actually great writers today who are stifled by producers simply because producers are brain dead prototypes for Beavis and Butthead. At least we have these classics still with us.

I loved the scene with his mother. So real and believable. Today, a modern writer would have Bogie blow up her entire building.

Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time
that's not funny!

Didn't you find Marjorie Main's turn as his mother somewhat overtheatrical? I know she played the mother on the stage but the director or Bogie should have told her to tone it down.

reply

She sounds as if she's doing a W.C. Fields impression.

"Go away son, ya bother meeeeee."

It ain't easy being green, or anything else, other than to be me

Was it just me, or did she still look tasty?

This was Claire Trevor's big break. Then came Stagecoach, a bigger break.

How about when she asks for a kiss on the cheek; she exits the frame, Wyler shoots Bogart from behind as he disgustedly wipes his lips with his hand. Not such a grand "homecoming" for Bogart's character.
