Confusing Plot and Characters - but Anatole????

Spoilers Ahead
Loved this movie but had difficult time figuring things out. Was Anatole a German spy or a double agent? Who killed him? Did Anatole know that Madeleine was a double agent? We last see him (sent by Madeleine) to the Cherry Orchard inquiring about Marwitz with a person aligned with the Germans or Marwitz? So did the Germans kill their own or did Marwitz have Anatole killed? Many Germans did not know that Marwitz was not a deserter and did not know that he was ahead of Section 8.

How did Madeleine smuggle German war plans to the British? They showed you how she smuggled French secrets to the Germans with maps in her dresses but it didn't show how she communicated with the British. Or did she? Maybe it was just to give misinformation to the Germans about the French.

I have since found out there is about 5 minutes of this film that has been cut. I think the missing scenes emphasized their great love, but what was the plan for Madeleine at the hands of Marwitz at the end? What was he planning to do with her once he got her off the ship? Turn her in? Not turn her and and they both would executed? They talked about going away but he shot down all of the places. There was a quote that I found on another site that seemed to be deleted - Marvitz says to Madeleine "Death is nothing to what I feel for you..." Both were honest to their true countries and told the truth about each other. I just couldn't figure out Marwitz's plan for her.

Spies 124 and 125 (a woman) were killed. Were they German spies killed by the British or French?

I think Anatole was working with Madeleine and was killed by Mawitz or those in his engagement.

Madeleine had dresses sewn with patterns marking stategic naval positions. Madeleine didn't smuggle plans to the Germans. The plans she provided that were wrong. Someone sabotaged her. Her link to the British was via Bob.

Marwitz would have had Madeleine interrogated and then probably executed.

Spies 124 and 125 were working for either the French or British.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.
