Manuel the Ultimate Mentor

If anyone hasn't seen this movie, please don't read this post.

It kills me everytime Manuel goes under with a ton of love for the Brat. I've seen this movie so many times in the past 40 years and damn.....if a tear still rears it head up!

And yes, I cry too! I also cry when the father and son get closer at the end.

It is a great movie with great acting on Spencer Tracy's part. He really deserved the Academy Award. The scene when Manuel talks of his father is touching indeed.

You can see the father's loss. He wants to bring out the good in his son.
Finally does at the end.

Okay...I'll admit it too. The end where the boy moves his hand to his father's and the dad squeezes it...gets me right here.

I admit too. I thought Frank Capra was the only one able to make movies that make me tear up. Sorry Mr. Capra but you'll have to move over a bit.

I am glad to see there are others that are moved by this film. I am not a cryer and it takes a lot to make me cry. Everytime I see this film, especially the second half gets me. It is so well done and seeing the spoiled boy turn into a decent person because of Manuel is so wonderful to watch. Who didn't cry when he died near the end? Best part Spencer ever played and he had a lot of great film moments.

Isn't it great how Manuel talks about the Savior, and shares the New Testament story about Peter and the fish? I LOVE when writers incorporate their faith into their work. Like Shakespeare, it's so clever and brilliant!

I agree with the other posts. I am not a cryer by any means, but the end of this film gets me every time. The acting by Freddie, Spencer and Barrymore during Manual's death is flawless. They really make you think he is dying. And then the scenes with his father bonding with him while coping with his friends death are so wonderful. I am person who steers away from movies where a character I love, dies, but this film has too many wonderful things going for it. I don't know if there is another character I ever enjoyed more than Manual. Spencer Tracy totally derserved that Oscar he won for this role. I am also a big believer in putting Godliness/faith into films. It seems that most films today are anything but Godly. The Peter and the fish story was wonderful. Adding the story about him meeting up with his father made it ok for him to die, even though you did not want him to die. We all knew he would be in heaven with his father. Lastly I loved the final scene where Freddie and his father are in the car talking and they pop up an image of Spencer on the screen. What a wonderful end to a film.
