great film/ Garbo's best

I can't imagine anyone else in the role of Marguerite. This has to be Garbo's best film. She always felt she gave her best performance in this and I would have to agree with her.

lol! well I ended up just using it for that one post. So don't worry lol. My new one is from Miss Tallulah Bankhead who I believe had an affair with Garbo, if not then they were very good friends.
I haven't seen many of her films either but yea I loved this one. Ecspecially the last scene.

"My father warned me about men and booze, but he never mentioned a word about women and cocaine."

I've seen that one before on the Classic Film message board, i never knew Tallulah Bankhead said it! She was a lesbian? Was Greta?!

Both of them were bisexuals. Tallulah summed it up in that quote and Greta said in her autobio "If there is one word for my sexuality it is confusion. I have fallen in love with members of both sexes". If you look at many celebrities in the Golden Era it is uncommon to see that they expiermented with sexuality. Many stars were bisexual and just never came out about it.

I've only seen a handful of Garbo's films so far. I remember seeing Camille a couple of years ago. It was my first Greta Garbo film. It still sticks out as the best film and performance I've seen to date of hers. Grand Hotel comes in a very close second.

TCM is airing Greta Garbo's films next month in honor of her 100th birthday, as well as a new documentary, so I'll be able to see more of her work.

"Dry your eyes baby, it's out of character."

reply

Yes! I am also waiting for this anniversary. 100th birthday takes place only once... I do not have access to TCM but a German TV, ARD, is also going to show most of the sound films with Garbo.

It is difficult to say if CAMILLE is the best film Garbo made. It is very beautiful, very sentimental, it contains magnificent cinematography, and the performances are really great. Greta plays Marguerite naturally to such an extend that one watches the film and loses awareness if it is an actress or a real character. But I also very much appreciate QUEEN CHRISTINA (1933) where Garbo gives an unforgettable performance as a Swedish queen who abdicates to Love. Her second adaptation of ANNA KARENINA (1935) (the first one was under the title LOVE and it was a silent movie) is also worth a look. I dream to see GRAND HOTEL (1932) and CONQUEST (1937) because I have heard a lot of good things about these movies.

By the way, Garbo is also famous for having played in silents like WOMAN OF AFFAIRS (1928) or FLESH AND THE DEVIL (1927). Interesting to see and get to know this magnificent actress more.

Greetings to all Garbo and Camille fans!

Cinema is a good way of escaping from problems and sorrows of life.

She's wonderful. And Robert Taylor is terrific too. They really made a great on screen couple. Too bad they didn't work together again.

I love Ninotchka too. It's a shame she wasn't able to do more films of that type.

Garbo never published an autobiography. Her legend was based on jealously guarding her privacy.
