lack of chemistry between Flynn and Francis

This one was a disappointment for me. Though the garden scene is lovely and Flynn and Francis look great, otherwise there's just not much spark between them in the romantic scenes.

I see what you're saying; they don't seem to have a natural fit and it's like they don't belong together, but that sometimes happens. Remember, they had a strange attraction that kind of came out of nowhere and then grew. It was not meant to be obvious; not even to them until after it had taken hold. After that, as much as they tried to hide or deny it, their feelings for each other were clear to all.

When they first ran across each other, he approached her but it was because she was a woman and on her own. He was a ladies' man; she was a target. She wanted nothing to do with him at that point. He was not the type of guy she could go for and she had given up on finding love with any man. Finding out they had a common link, her husband, added an extra barrier; another reason their relationship would seem unlikely. They were each loyal to him and did not want to betray him but their unexpected attraction was too great.

I don't think the actors were miscast. In my opinion they were chosen because they they portrayed the characters they were playing. Actors with natural chemistry, in my opinion, would not have worked because we would immediately 'see' what drew them together. That was not what it was about; it was something deeper and more elusive.

I really liked your 'take' on this. I hadn't though of it until you explained it so well. Thanks for taking the time. I like this film much more for it.

I have to say the more Errol Flynn films I see,the more I appreciate his acting. Sure, everyone likes the pirate films and Robin Hood, but the more obscure, not as 'feel good' ones shine because of him.

How nice of you to say! While I love reading what people have to say, I never read anything about a movie until after I've seen it and formed my own opinions. Still, other people's comments often cause me to consider aspects of the movie I hadn't previously considered. Then, when, or if, I see the movie again, I usually have a new and different appreciation for it. That's exactly what happened when I watched this movie again the other night.
