what does Winterset mean?

It does'nt say anything about it in the movie, maybe it does in the play. Could it be the name of the town where the crime occured or the name of the prison? Or a state of mind, although I can't imagine that, I don't know what that mught be. No one says anything about it in any of the posts here or in any review that I've read. I'll dig deeper, I suppose.

I read in Wikipedia that the play has some ties to Shakespearean and Judaic philosophies, huh. Maybe there was some place or time called Winterset in a WS play. geez

I think you might be right. I saw this film as a child on pbs.The scenery is almost tangible through the film.
