one of Harlow's strongest performances

Not all of Jean Harlow's movies have been seen by me. But I saw Wife vs. Secretary years ago. There is one scene that stands out. That is the dramatic climax, where Loy is about to leave Gable and Harlow comes to her room and gives her a pep talk. She uses reverse psychology in part of it, saying Loy should go ahead and leave him and see if I(Harlow)care.

You can tell all the time Harlow is really in love with Gable. That is also shown in the closeup of her later when she knows she has given up Gable for the good of his marriage and his reputation.

What I also remember is the scene at or near the end. Harlow gets into the car with Jimmy Stewart. You can tell she is disappointed and is only agreeing to stay with him because she can't have first choice.

Harlow really got my sympathy in this film. She makes the emotional speech to Loy. Then, returns to her boyfriend knowing he can give her stability but also boredom. She wants caviar but settles for hash.

She is excellent in this movie and a lot of her fans put it up there with her very best screen work.

It's one of my favourite Harlow movies though I haven't seen it in years. Her and Myrna Loy are an interesting contrast - the wife (normally portrayed as loyal and devoted) is shown as a seductress while the Harlow character has the dependable qualities normally show in a wife. Harlow's early death robbed the movie world of a great star.
