Trivia

The one bit of trivia listed on this page for this film says so much:

In the scene where people sing a lullaby in various languages to the black child, the bit sung in Yiddish by Solomon Mikhoels was cut out of the film for distribution in the USSR, for a time when a state-backed anti-Semitism campaign was unleashed.

reply

Made all the more ironic by the fact that the film's message is about the racial and ethnic tolerance in the Soviet Union!

"God is nowhere, God is now here"
-Hey Nostradamus, Douglas Coupland

reply

Exactly. How many untold times over the decades have I heard the implicit position of so many Russians: Oh yes, we know all about racism and bigotry-- it's what you Americans have/had in the way you treat/treated your blacks.

They "know" about this because in the States there is a dialogue about prejudice. This is as opposed to many other nations in which prejudice is perpetuated indefinitely without question or reflection, often assisted by government institutions.

reply

Or because that piece of trivia is complete bull....

Do you have a historical source that makes you doubt the story, or are you just projecting your own inability to deal with cases of bigotry?

reply

Just read some of your other posts and got my answer. Seems you have a staggering difficulty dealing with some fundamental realities of Soviet history and prefer a reconsctructed, head-in-the-sand fantasy Soviet realm in which you work out your own clear insecurities by flirting with moral extremism.

Maybe a psychiatrist would be more effective than public posts?

reply

Oh yes, you got me red handed...haha get it? RED handed?

Many members of the politburo and bureaucracy were jewish, Lazar Kaganovich, Anastas Mikoyan, are the most well known. All during the times of Stalin.

There is no source for such a claim that this "trivia" makes.

reply

No source? This bit of trivia refers to the period of anti-Semitism from 1948 to 1953, when Stalin's public speeches repeatedly stoked the idea of Jews being insufficiently patriotic and controlled by American propaganda. It was during this period that all references to Jews in public discourse were suppressed, and an entire generation that had grown up knowing very well the lullaby sung by Mikhoels in Tsirk suddenly noticed the song cut from any re-showings of the movie.

And by the way, Mikhoels himself, who led a Jewish activist organization, was murdered by Stalin's direct orders, as declassified archival documents show incontrovertibly.

reply

Hahaha. So the anti-Yiddish claim was just more American redbaiting propaganda?

reply

No, it wasn't "redbaiting propaganda".
That was real socialist everyday life.

Nowadays homosexuals are more targeted in Russia. 👋

reply

Nonsense. Both anti-Semitism and homophobia are rife in many societies. Your own link shows there were periods of anti-Semitism in the USSR followed by more progressive movements. Marx was Jewish. Trotsky was Jewish. Lenin was part Jewish.

It's like pointing to anti-Semitic Protestants in the U.S. or McCarthyism and claiming America is anti-Semitic.

Get away from me with that bullshit. I wasn't born yesterday.

reply

Marx was German.
Trotsky was murdered by Stalin.
Lenin's jewish father converted to Christianity and Lenin died 1924.

Yah, it's understandable that you don't like reading those things about Soviet/Russian anti-Semitism and homophobia.
Btw. since you like Putin so much:
Do you know where Navalny is? ☻

reply

Who said I like Putin "so much"?

And didn't you just applaud the harassment of homosexuals in Russia?

Nothing is black and white. And you've never shown that Russia is more anti-Semitic than America. Again, Marx was an atheist, Lenin was an atheist, but they were both ethnic Jews.

reply

Your appreciation and affection for Russia (Putin) and your dislike for Ukraine (Zelenskyy) showed quite clearly that you like Putin.

I never "applaud the harassment of homosexuals"!
And I never did, neither in Russia nor anywhere else.
Stop your "bullshit" lies. ☻

So, we discuss anti-Semitism and homophobia in the Soviet Union/Russia. There are certainly countries where things were and are worse, but that's not the issue here.
With Marx/Lenin/Trotsky you only intended to distract from the actual topic. Again:
Marx was a German and died 1883.
Lenin died 1924...his father converted to Christianity.
Trotsky was murdered by Stalin.

But Grigori Perelman (*1966 Saint Petersburg) is still alive!
His life story also shows how anti-Semitism worked.

Unfortunately we still don't know where Navalny is.
Well, Navalny isn't a Jew, he's just a Putin critic. One of many who suddenly disappeared or died a strange (accidental) death.
Zelenskyy is Jewish...just saying.

reply

There were just as many jews that had been arrested during the "Great Purge" than non jews, there were no targeting of jews.

reply

It was a propaganda film.
