This bit of trivia refers to the period of anti-Semitism from 1948 to 1953, when Stalin's public speeches repeatedly stoked the idea of Jews being insufficiently patriotic and controlled by American propaganda. It was during this period that all references to Jews in public discourse were suppressed, and an entire generation that had grown up knowing very well the lullaby sung by Mikhoels in Tsirk suddenly noticed the song cut from any re-showings of the movie.
And by the way, Mikhoels himself, who led a Jewish activist organization, was murdered by Stalin's direct orders, as declassified archival documents show incontrovertibly.
