Went to the web site. I wonder if I can get the 'restored' version here. The last copy i rented was really a poor copy.

GREAT story...and fantastic special effects for the time.

Dear Ian,
It's encouraging to hear that someone still cares about these older, but still excellent films. My message on this film got deleted, but I got the composer wrong anyways: it wasn't Arthur Honneger, it was Arthur Benjamin! Thanks again for the info. Regards, F_86A_sabre

We saw a review on the restored THINGS TO COME available in a two (2) disc set in Great Britain. Review was in a magazine called SFX. The running time listed was 116 minutes. Have tried to get additional information but so far not successful. www.sfx.co.uk

Well what can i say about this movie? I had never even heard of it till it was on TV in the UK over the Bank Holiday weekend. I was amazed at the vision of the work as a whole and i truly believe this movie deserves to be held in the same regard as 2001, The Terminator and other films thought be groundbreaking.

I actually found the story quite horrifying in its depiction of the world returned to the middle ages with teh street Market Seller of diary and butchers etc coupled with Mechanics trying to fix plane parts in order to fly again. Subtle things like the price of newspaper in one of the montages leading to the next decade costing 4pounds.

I am definately purchasing this film as it affected like no other has since watching The Day After when i was 16.

We assume this is the extended and restored version. Can you confirm this when you receive your purchase? Include full details of distributer and manufacturer on DVD case/jacket with contact information.

The Britsh DVD is the longest known existing version. It is only a few minutes longer than other versions that are avaialble but the picture quality is far superior. All the other copies you find on Amazon are boolegs (even Legend Films version) and have not used the best source material.

There is a misconception that the film is in the public domain in the US but it has not been in the public domain their since 1996.

This is the only official (non-bootleg) release.

Um, then how come that archive.org has it (93 minutes) for download, as "public domain"?

reply

Because they carry the same misconception. I have seen plenty of copyrighted material available on that sight.

I just heard of this today when I was checking another actor's site on IMDB and this little gem showed up. If the never before released footage is on the DVD then I will definitely have to get it!

...will be presented in glorious HD...

What is the point when it wasn't HD to begin with? I suppose it will be in Dolby Digital 6 channel as well? The HD wankers are really getting up my nose. They want free content delivered over the internet; a HD movie might be 25 gigabytes or more. This is an irresponsible waste of bandwidth and resources which are getting scarcer just due to these same wankers.

This movie was shot on 35 mm black and white film with an aspect ratio of 1.37 : 1. That is beyond HD. 16 mm film is close to HD resolution (1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels for a 16:9 aspect ratio).

Exactly. Anything shot on film can be "converted" so to speak to HD. Even old silent films if properly mastered have a lot more to offer than what a standard DVD can hold.

anymore news on when this new version will be released? or should I just get the 2 disc DVD?

reply

I'm watching the new DVD from the Criterion collection. Normally they include the most complete version of a film available but they say nothing about restored footage. The running time is exactly 97 minutes. Is this the most complete cut they could find?

I hope that they someday find the deleted material and restore it like The Complete Metropolis restoration a few years ago. I would watch a 2-3 hour version of this film.

EDIT: It appears that the Criterion edition contains the most complete cut, a 97min version that uses all existing footage. The only longer version is the British one with the still images filling in the blanks.

reply

You'd think Criterion could at least have supplied the original movie trailer for this Blu-ray version. But, no, nary a one. Guess I'll hang onto my older Image DVD release for a while longer.
