Silly animal morality cock-up

The idea (to re-use yet more footage from the previous films) that Tarzan kills a crocodile to save a baby deer is farcical.

Why would Tarzan (who cares for the animals) kill another animal, just doing what it does naturally everyday to survive, to save another?
Cheetah perhaps, but not a general deer.

Why would saving the deer at the expense of the crocodile be okay?

Tarzan, before, has only killed animals in self defence, to save Jane or for food. anything else is just against character.

I have to agree and the abuse of animals in all these films is quite appalling. One scene I remember from this was when the lady found two lion cubs in the jungle (inaccurate as lions live on the plains), the mother returns and the Captain shoots her and they all push off. What about the cubs ???

Hollywood probably encouraged thousands of hunting safaris by naking rubbish like this.

Deer tasty. Crocodile nasty. Wait for deer to grow up. Eat deer.

Yeah the idea of "bad animals" vs. "good animals" is silly. As are many things in the series. Many of the views in regard to race, gender roles and indeed animal treatment are quite insulting. That being said, I think a lot of the appeal of these Tarzan films is their straightforwardness. So many things about the character and his world are dated and morally deplorable and I find it a bit refreshing that crocodiles, lizards and lions are portrayed as the devils of nature. There is so much exoticism in these films. They aren't about correctly depicting foreign cultures and wild life, they are about making the natives seem stranger and the beasts seem wilder. The exoticism is derived from this hightened drama. The films are in many ways quite dated but they have an innocent charm stemming from a desire to tell an exciting story - and if they occasionally (to say the least) make some absurdly anachronistic choices, I can live with it, as the objective was never to insult or harm, but only to entertain.

What I do find appaling is when the films occasionally use animals that clearly in real life have not been treated well. There is at one point a really shabby looking lion making an appearance and THAT completely takes me out of the experience.

Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks? Shaft!

I disagree. If I saw a wolf attacking a roe deer, I would have no compunction shooting the wolf. And it has nothing to do with the deer being sweet and cuddly.

Never mind why Tarzan saved the deer.....did you see how big that Crocodile was?
That was prehistoric size....if Weismuller was 6'-2" that croc was easily 20 plus feet long....anyway,it was the 1930's and the special effects done by hand-so,not so bad

Yeah, that was a huge papier-mâché croc. Not bad for those days. I've seen Tarzan fighting really plastic looking ones in other films.
