Am I the only one who finds the dog/mountain scene to be one of the most suspenseful & masterfully crafted scenes ever? No music. No theatrics, special effects or car chases. Just 3 people climbing a mountain, 3 people learning German, and a dog. Absolutely brilliant.
It was weird later that the dog was scratching and howling at the door as his master was about to get pushed off. Did the dog have psychich powers, or was it able to sniff evil-afoot from so far away?
I think the dog had ESP or something. I've heard about dogs going nuts on the night their master died, even far away.
Lord Carnarvon, the guy who discovered King Tut's tomb, was in Egypt when he died, and it's reported his dog in England went nuts and died at the exact same moment :( Maybe Hitchcock was thinking about that when he did this scene.
It's undeniably one of the landmark scenes in film History. Seems to have been forgotten for a while, but it is sure to come back.
This was probably the big scene in the film, and to me makes a classic out of filmtht otherwise would have just been "excellent".
This directing masterpiece needs to be in every film class, in my opinion. Imdb seems to cater more to the dorks who have to have expensive effects, but this scene mastered the story telling ability and emotion that movies with big budget special effects can only wish they could accomplish.
Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time that's not funny!
It was a greatly suspensful scene and by far the best scene in Secret Agent. The film had been flat till this scene and thankfully this scene picked up the pace of the narrative.
