Jeanette MacDonald Had To Convince Clark Gable To Do This Film?

I have the VHS release of this movie and the first sentence on the back reads:

"Jeanette MacDonald persuaded a skeptical Clark Gable to star opposite her in the 1936 production of 'San Francisco'."

Anyone have more info. on what this was about?
