A Beautiful Movie

"Beautiful" may sound a bit odd, but I can't think of the right adjective perhaps to describe this movie. The sets were great, which is not always the case with movies of this period, the script very moving.

Like the Hunchback, its always great to see Charles Laughton in this type role....

Being a fan of the movie "Star" was also very interested in seeing a performance by Gertrude Lawrence, and my only dissapointment was her role wasn't large enough :)

Elsa Lanchester is always great, but before this have never seen anything of her early performances....

I agree that this was a beautiful movie. Charles Laughton gave an outstanding performance.
I was able to go to a showing of Rembrandt's work at the Art Institute and to me this movie was a Masterpiece as well.

Charles Laughton is a legend, an amazing actor.

I also got into this movie because of "Daphne" and "Star!" and was entranced by Gertrude Lawrence...Charles Laughton and Elsa Lancaster are gold as usual

I rented this film (from the Korda box set) and watched it twice in one day. I've always admired the work of Charles Laughton, but this was something so special, I was mesmerized. Why an Oscar for Henry Vlll and not for this?

Yes, sir, I'm going to do nothing like she's never been done before!

Agreed. Laughton was great in both but I prefer Rembrandt also.

I think Charles Laughton owns this movie, whatever flaws and cracks in this biopic, his acting is the redeeming factor.

Recommended if only to see him become on of history's greatest painters!
