The Prisoner of Shark Island

This 1936 John Ford film is being released on DVD in the UK as part of the "Masters of Cinema" series by Eureka, a sort of transatlantic wannabe Criterion Collection. Since they've taken their edition from Twentieth Century Fox's own digital restoration - the film being out of copyright in Europe, though not in America - you can expect it to appear in Fox's own Studio Classics series in due course. For a 30s bio-pic, it's a remarkably even-handed piece of work, and well worth a viewing.

Can anyone direct me to a site that sells this movie? I've been all over the place and can't find it. Several sites say it's available as of Nov. 24, 2005, but I'm still have no luck. Any help appreciated.

reply

Yeah, go to www.confederatereprint.com

You should find it under the films section. I hope that helps.

Fox Movie Channel (FMC) is starting to show it as of 5/18/06. Hopefully it will be available in the USA soon.

"they are not a wannabe criterion collection there a whole lot better then criterion by far"

Huh???

The original poster referred to masters of cinema as a wannabe criterion collection. Although their above post isn't grammatically sound, it is perfectly understandable. And no, they are not a "wannabe" criterion collection. For some time now, criterion have been releasing titles that MoC have previously released.

Agreed- The Masters of Cinema series is no pale imitation of Criterion. THey have alternative essays and sometimes have different prints. Besides they release films not yet released by Criterion. I have a region-free player but I would purchase an MoC edition before I would purchase a Criterion or Kino DVD. (Off the point, but why do some Kino editions have such tacky-looking covers?? Sadie Thompson sports a great print but that cover's colours just look "off". Same goes for the look of the Buster Keaton covers e.g. Sherlock Jr.)
