Was Collins Killed?

From wathching the movie, I can never deduce that question, even though it says so in a number of reviews of the film.

All we here is the scream, then her lying on the ground. Then later on some staff at a hospital making a comment.

Interested in any comments on this.

I'm thinking she died.

Just be truthful and if you can fake that you've got it made. ;)

If she were alive, she'd be one of the ones looking for Barb, unless she was in a coma.

Let's just say that God doesn't believe in me.

Considering that they never shied away from killing off one or both of Shirley's character's parents in most of her films, it just seems odd that they would demure over the death of her nurse. But, considering that she is neither seen or mentioned again,I think it is safe to assume that she did die.

I think Collins got killed accidentally when stepping partially off the curb when she panics after "losing" her purse and looks for a policeman. (She has just lost her purse and does not realize it was stolen. IT was a hit and run. Because the thief who stole her bag removed ID as well as money (he threw her purse away after stealing any money) she is a Jane Doe. Her young charge does not know what happened, so thinks she ran away after losing her purse. After seeing it many times as a kid on TV I wonder now if the intent of the writers was this scenario - Maybe the pickpocket was in league with the driver of the car who wanted to remove Collins in case she could identify the robber. We do see that this guy plans to kidnap Shirley later in the rooming house where the Dolans lived.

Poor Collins who seemed to have a lonely and regimented life was removed from the scene.

Movie girl: Yes. Someone stole Collins's purse and she agitatedly stepped off the curb to find the thief. Sadly, a car ran her down. Then we see the petty thief (who had stolen her wallet) throw her purse in a trashcan. He walks away unconcernedly. (This is what I think happened. I have seen and loved this film many times). The viewer tends to feel sympathetic toward Colins (played by the great Sara Haden) who has a lonely personal life.

I wasn't sure what to think. I assumed she survived and was hospitalized but was unable to identify herself; maybe she was in a coma or had amnesia.

Usually when they want us to know someone has died they'll cover their face or the other characters will say something that lets us know they're gone.

In this movie it’s not clear if Collins has died or not. The doctor says send her description to missing persons but that could apply either way.

Perhaps it's left intentionally vague for a reason. All Shirley's movies seem to fit a specific pattern or formula.

1. At least one person close to her is killed or believed dead.

2. Cute little Shirley ends up in a fix.

3. Shirley is tormented by a very bad person.

4. Despite all her hardships, she remains cheerful; sings, dances, encourages others

5. Things look bleak things may not work out for our poor Shirley

6. Against all odds, Shirley is rescued in the nick of time.

7. Someone close to her ends up in love and happily together headed for the altar.

In this movie, Barbara has no mom; she’s dead. If Collins, her alternate mom, dies that would be two women in her life that are gone. It would be unusual for her to lose two people of the same sex in one movie. She's lost more than one person before, whether they died at the same time or not, but it’s always been one man or one woman. How many people can one girl lose to tragedy before she cracks up?

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

Thank you so much. As I think you have solved the problem for me. If Collins had been killed, she would have been taken to a morgue. But the next scene is one in a hospital where a doctor is saying they don't know where she came from. That would appear to imply she is suffering some amnesia as you say, and without her purse (which we know was stolen), there would have been no identification. The subject only comes again at the end of the movie when Barbara is reunited with her father. He asks her what happened to her, as she was to insure she arrived safely at school. Barbara said, "She lost her purse so I decided to go on a vacation". Now if she had been killed, by that time surely he would have been contacted as despite the fact that she was going on a holiday, this was her place of residence and employment.

Movie girl: I deduced from the accident and seeing the thief steal from her purse that she had died. True to life, Shirley thought she had lost her purse and ran away. An interesting thing is that Sarah Hayden could play a severe part like that or a prim school-mistress, but was lovely in The Fountain with Ann Harding and Paul Lukas.

Oh, I hope not! As much as I didn't like the way Collins fussed so much, I certainly wouldn't have wished for her to be hit and killed by a car.
