$5,000 life insurance policy

Watching this just now, Leslie Howard mentions his $5,000 life insurance policy -- hardly seems like enough to buy "golden castles" and whatever else he waxes lyric about, but I put that figure through an inflation calculator, and $5,000 1936 dollars is worth almost $78,000 2010 dollars! Still not a fortune, but would get ME out of debt!

He doesn't make much money
Only five thousand per
Some judge who thinks he's funny
Says you'll pay six to her.

He says now judge suppose I fail.
The judge says bud go right to jail.
You better keep her,
I think it's cheaper,
Than makin' whoopee.

I wonder what his premiums were? Two dollars a month? Five dollars per quarter? My mother once showed me her brother's life insurance policy, left over from 1939 or '40. It was for $2,500 and the premium was $3.00 per quarter1

May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?
