Were they using real bullets?

I remember reading somewhere that they used live ammunition in some scenes in the shootout in Angels with Dirty Faces (1938).
Watching The Petrified Forest I couldn't help but notice that the scene in which Bogart is shot at by a guy with a Thompson machine gun looked remarkably realistic with the shattering of the window.

Does anyone know if they actually used live ammunition in this flick?

According to James Cagney a man by the name of "Bailey"
a veteran of WWI used a real Thompson machine
in the scene were he and the other guy come out of the safe house
and are shot in PUBLIC ENEMEY.
The same individual used a Thompson machine gun for real in the scene at the window,
with ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES,except Cagney insisted they use a superimposed shot in that whereas he was missed by seconds in PUBLIC ENEMY.

Interesting, thank you for that bit of trivia.
You wouldn't happen to know anything about the use of guns in this movie?
