Question about the look of the film

I am a movie buff and for some reason have not seen this film until tonight on TCM. I started watching and thought for sure this was made in the 1940s because the picture was so clear, etc. I can usually figure the year of a movie just by watching, but this one stumped me. I was shocked (and still am) to see it was made in 1936. Can anyone enlighten me as to why it looks later? Any movie buffs out there? Must be the budget, but also technical advances. Haven't researched it yet, but will.
Edit: Still watching and, off topic, I am reminded of how much a fan of Bing Crosby I am.

It could be that it's just a really good and/or restored print. There were lots of mid-to-late '30s films that still look great, especially in HD.

Yes, and thankful for restoration and/or original, because such a wonderful film. It makes me smile.
