I don't get it.

The plot line says that this guy has given up on modern society...so he does an experiment? And what do they mean by he's trying to live in moderd society with the help of a tramp? Did he do time travel? If he did, that should have been mentioned in the plot summuray...I'm not even going to bother with this movie...even if the plot made sence, it would still be a peice of crap...

I just had to watch this movie too. Its about its social ties to the silent era. All the sound effects and voices were done in post. Its about Chaplin making fun of the new talkie movies of that time. Notice how the evil boss talks notice how the new machine is made to eliminate the work week. The two main characters that are struggling just to get by never make a sound. Also when Chaplin does finally speak he signs a song to Americans in another language and they love it. Actions speak louder than words and that’s what this movie is about. Chaplin pokes fun at new films and makes a silent movie when they were all but over.

If you hate it then you don't understand it and I'm sorry

It's actually about Chaplin criticizing modern society (hence Modern Times) and how people are being dehumanized and machines running society. Also poking fun at Henry Ford and his assembly line. just how people were struggling to have jobs and losing them because of machines and all that jazz!

I just said something like this yesterday. What an interesting world we would live in if the only time people spoke to each other is if they both liked the subject at hand... Telling someone not to post because they are not a fan seems dense and ridiculous to me, to be kind and gentle about it.

the dumbest question i have read!!!!do you expect the time machine?

even equiped with a shovel and you couldn't dig this

I put the "I" before the "E". It's not that big of a mistake.

And, I love Charles Chaplin and most of his movies. But when I read the plot synopsis, it didn't make any sence to me. That's all.

You shouldn't say a movie is a piece of crap if you haven't seen it yet. If you like Chaplin you'll love this film, watch it, get back here and tell us what you thought of it.

But don't talk of what you don't know, it makes you look REALLY stupid.

I get it- this movie was made in 1936, one year before the sit down strike in Flint, MI that started the United Auto Workers and the modern labor movement in this country- Chaplin identified the growing discontent the "common" man had serving his rich overlords, and their (the workers) desire to become middle class (like his fantasy in the movie about living in the nice house)- this movie also is very funny to go along with its social commentary, and his co-star, Paulette Goddard, is one of the most stunning women I've ever seen.

'sence'?

I saw part of it on TCM. Finally got interested, and got hit by Paulette Goddard. I watched it again when I had a chance and loved it. Here is some of what I got out of it.

Chaplin somehow managed to inject so much meaning into a series of comic vignettes.

Little guy versus the big, not fitting in, dehumanized by big industry, the challenges of the depression (hunger, homelessness), finding a soul mate, searching for you niched in the job market.

Modern Times, the '30s, but to me still relevant in our "modern times".

"The plot line..."

I know it's years later, but someone has to say it. What "plot line"? The plot summary on imdb? Some TV Guide blurb? What are you talking about? Even if your post about "moderd" society made "sence," it would still be a "peice" of crap.

Are you like one of those ... morons?? Yes, yes you are.
