Why do people say this is the last movie with the tramp in it?

When the tramp was in The Great Dictator? Is it because he speaks properly in Dictator? Why? It's clearly still the tramp character.

I've long wondered about that, too. I guess it is because The Tramp isn't a "tramp" in "Dictator" -- he has his outfit but enjoys a quite different position in the society.

That's what I've wondered. After watching it a few times, I realized that the barber and the tramp are two diffrent characters. You can definetley tell.

I think that being silent was one of the tramp's characteristics. I read somewhere that Chaplin was against putting the tramp in a talkie because "the tramp doesn't speak". So when he started making talking films, Chaplin left the tramp to the silent era.

In any case, the character in The Great Dictator is, by definition, not a tramp--he's a barber.

Yeah, they're dead, they're--all messed up.
