Enthralling telling of Mary's story

I loved this film. First of all, it's beautifully shot. Katharine Hepburn had never looked more ravishing on film as she does in this.

This was an interesting telling of the events of Mary Queen of Scot's life. But what was interesting was the degree to which the film made her seem innocent of all accusations. It basically implied that she was framed, end of story. From what I've read it seems there was a little more to it than that. Nevertheless, I find the notion of her innocence quite fascinating because by and large Mary didn't really seem the type to commit the acts she was accused of.

Hepburn's performance is very well measured, starting out weak, unsure, and gaining in confidence as well as despair as the film progresses.

Yes, the phrase that came to mind watching it was historical hogwash but, hey, that's Hollywood.
