Underwhelming? No, just lousy.
Sad to say, this is one of Bogart's worst films. He just isn't right, looking silly in a mini-mostache. The supporting players are less than exciting, poorly dressed with funny wigs, and the story is highly contrived, and has a slapdash conclusion. Who was Grandpa with the high voice? What an annoying character! E.E. Clive seems like he played a drunk while drunk. Poor Bogart was nearly eaten by an octopus. I bet he wish he was so he would not have to finish the picture. Grade C.
