Joan Crawford does not work in a period movie

I just could never get on board with Joan Crawford as a historical character in this movie. She feels so much "of her time" I guess. Maybe because she didn't do many period films, this one just doesn't work for me. The costumes are beautiful, but she doesn't look comfortable in them. And it's not just the clothes. Her mannerisms, her facial expressions, everything about her feels contemporary. Maybe she knew this about herself and that's why she didn't do many period movies.
