If anyone wants a nice old romantic melodramatic extravaganza that skates on the edge of silliness, it's free and in technicolor!

I just saw it on DVD. I was cooking, therefore I missed a few parts. I might check it out on YT someday. An interesting and decent film. It was kind of edgy for that era, a monk escaping his theological life to experience life and love. Not something you would think would've been addressed in the late 30's. I bet eyebrows were raised!.

I have no idea if it was considered risque or scandalous back in the day, I find it hard to believe anyone ever took the story seriously but someone had to, right?

But honestly, it's not sexy at all, the leading couple spends about 3x more time talking about religion than love, and when they SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER part ways, it's to needlessly go live celibately for the rest of their lives! Because he's going back to the monastery to live out his days instead of just teaching a few other guys the secret recipe and leaving, and she's going to stay devoted to a church that doesn't allow divorce or remarriage. So that honeymoon in the desert was IT.
