Yes, there were two daggers... The dancing girl, Irena (who is played by Tilly Losch), is in love with Hadj, Batouch's brother, a minor character in the movie who mainly serves to provide comic relief. As Batouch tells an incredulous Domini Enfilden when everyone is entering the tent where Irena is due to perform: 'She is in love with Hadj, so she wants to kill him'. Batouch amuses himself by deliberately endangering his brother's life (so it appears); just as Irena prepares to dance with a pair of small silver daggers in her hands, Batouch uncovers Hadj's head (which he has obscured with a hood for fear of being spotted by Irena) and motions to Irena. Irena attempts to stab Hadj, and there is a great commotion in the tent, during which Boris Androvsky helps Domini escape outdoors by taking her arm and pushing through the animated crowds.
