Love this Movie !!!

I am an incurable romantic and I loved this movie when I first saw it in my twenties and I still love it now that I am in my 60s. Perhaps I still long for the love of my life.........!

I liked the look of this movie but it is shocking how openly racist it is. Back in those days you could make caricatures out of any group. As a small child growing up in the 50's I would have just sucked in the attitudes without thinking. Now after 50 years of life I can only stand to look at such things with a view of anthropological/historic change. Western society is hardly perfect but we have made a few tiny steps in the correct direction. The anti-Arab depictions in the film almost seemed to be almost calculated. I don't know what Selznick's attitude about Arabs was specifically, maybe he was just using a prevailing stereotype. Those old memes like the slow talking lazy Mexican, the Steppin Fetchin blacks, the hysterical screaming women, movie makers of that day didn't give it a second thought.

I've just watched this for the fist time in ages and still really liked it. Gorgeously romantic stuff of the sort they don't seem to do so well today. And I can't say I found it especially racist either!

Isn't this wonderful and a pleasant departure from most Dietrich movies?

What is not to love with Marlene Dietrich? She just radiates every time she is in the scene. The cinematography is just as spectacular. The art direction and production design is excellent as well.
