Melodramatic but powerful

Fury may be dated, the acting, writing and direction is melodramatic, but the film still resonates and the message is just as powerful today as it was in 1936 when lynchings were still common.

The film was set in melodramatic times.

It took a lot of courage Fritz Lang's part to even do a movie about lynching in 1936. According to one account he originally wanted "Fury" to be about a black lynching victim but the idea was thought to be to inflammatory by the studio by the studio so he did the movie with Spencer Tracy.

The writing and acting weren't meant to be subtle. It had Lang's signature style and certainly hit its mark although I preferred the later Intruder in the Dust.

"Intruder in the Dust was a lot more realistic then "Fury" because it was actually filmed in Oxford, Mississippi; not a studio back lot.

Also after World War Two Hollywood got enough courage to take on subjects like racism.

Although both films have the same theme, Intruder in the Dust was based on the work of Faulkner who worked with the production entity. I like Fury but Intruder In the Dust was a masterpiece by a Nobel-prize winning author.
