How did Joe's coat end up with his brother?

There is a pivotal elevator scene where Katherine noticed Joe's brother with the coat she mended for Joe before he left. How did the brother get hold of that coat? Joe did not wear it when he returned.

The coat would have been either in his cell with him or in the jail's property area. Either way it's hard to imagine that he would have been able to grab it as he ran for his life after the jail had been blown up while it was burning down!

And he definitely was not wearing it when he joined his brothers. The coat he's wearing then is much darker and a different material.

It's a pretty plot hole actually.

joe wears that coat when seeing katherine off on her train -- a whole year before the actions at the jailhouse and more than that before she sees it; and we never see the sewing repair on joe's trip west.

joe very easily could have been wearing another coat when first arrested, and he or his brothers then brought it along from chicago to capitol city (again, a year after the repair was made).

besides -- in support of the plot -- it's the misspelled anonymous letter to the judge that tips-off katherine... and his brother states this to joe... and katherine even tells joe it was indeed the letter (she never mentions the coat).

no plot hole here, simply a cinematic device to get katherine thinking about joe. and tied to that is the newspaper asking (her), "is this man alive"?
