Jean Arthur or Myrna Loy?

William Powell's chemistry with each of them was 100%

I'm a Jean Arthur fan, but Myrna Loy is Myrna Loy; she has a sexuality that really completes the Powell relationship in a way Arthur just can't.

I agree that Myrna Loy definitely has a sexuality. Really, I didn't think her that good looking, but that subtle sexuality definitely increased her desirability. Jean Arthur of course mastered screwball comedy.

After a little more thought I recalled Only Angels Have Wings w/Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, and Rita Hayworth. Hayworth is very young and cast precisely because of her physical appeal; however, Jean Arthur is clearly the most compelling woman.

So, I guess Ms. Arthur can hold up her end pretty well in the sexiness department even with hard competition.

Fan of both. Really like Jean Arthur though

Myrna Loy by a country mile!!

Please don't ask me to choose one over the other, but Jean Arthur and Powell sure were wonderful together!

Jean Arthur was a great fit for The Ex - Mrs Bradford. She brought so much enthusiasm to her character which added to the comedy.

It's like asking a mother which of her children she loves more, there's no way to answer that question.

I'm a huge fan of Jean Arthur and don't really care for Myrna Loy's screen image that much. But at the same time, there have been moments when I would watch Myrna Loy, and be completely touched by her – such as when I watched her in THIRD FINGER, LEFT HAND. She was so tender and romantic in that film. And those are qualities I really appreciate, when watching someone. However, those aren't typical of her on-screen persona, which is a big reason why I prefer Jean Arthur. Plus, I think Jean is quite pretty.

For some strange reason though, Jean Arthur is always lumped into the same category as Myrna Loy, Rosalind Russell, and Barbara Stanwyck as being one of the "wisecracking, no-nonsense dames". But, while she did make a few roles with those elements present in her character, a bigger majority of her filmography seems to consist of comedy that relies on cuteness more than cynicism and naivety more than sarcasm, whereas Myrna Loy is the latter. She's very often sarcastic and cynical in her films. And while Jean Arthur may make a wisecrack here and there, it's never with the intent to be a smart Alec, not that I can see. It's more with the childlike enthusiasm of wanting to show off a funny joke, which is not the same thing. Plus, Jean's not as much a part of screwball comedy as people keep making her out to be. She made just as many or more well-known melodramas and romances, and to me, that's really where she shines. Because she had a softness about her that the others in the so-called "wisecracking Dame" category didn't quite possess to the same degree – at least not on screen. But even in Jean's comedies, that softness is an element that is always there. It's just part of who she was as an actress.

So, I think that when it comes to a comparison between Jean Arthur and Myrna Loy, there really is no comparison, because their screen images aren't as similar as so many seem to think. Jean Arthur is more like Mary Martin – cute, ditzy, adorable – funny. If we were to compare her to other film actresses, I would say she's a tiny bit like Julie Andrews, but as far as actresses of her own era, Mary Martin is the only one that comes to mind. Maybe Irene Dunne a bit too. But definitely not the other women she is usually compared with.

As for the question of who I prefer with William Powell, I have to go with Myrna Loy. Although I tend to prefer Jean in general, I do think that as a screen couple, Loy and Powell complemented each other perhaps better than they could've possibly complemented anyone else.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Jean Arthur for me. I loved Powell and her together. I find Myrna Loy comes across as rather snooty and her voice is very irritating. Sorry Myrna Loy fans!

reply

Myrna Loy all the way, I like Jean fine but fail to see the point of the perfect Powell making a callow imitation of The Thin Man.

Well said!

I'm also a big Jean Arthur fan, but there was no golden age pairing that was more enjoyable than Powell and Loy. I do like this film but, like Star of Midnight (where Ginger Rogers took the Myrna Loy part), The Ex-Mrs. Bradford was an attempt by RKO to do a Nick and Nora but not hitting the mark. Enjoy them both, but The Thin Man series (and the other 8 -- 9 counting Ms. Loy's cameo in The Senator was Indiscreet -- films that Loy and Powell starred in) is as good as 30s-40s comedy and chemistry get. I also think Myrna Loy was one of the sexiest women who ever lived, so I may be somewhat biased in my opinions.
But seeing Star of Midnight and The Ex-Mrs. Bradford both made within a year and a half of The Thin Man, one gets a good idea of just how popular the first Thin Man movie was.

Myrna Loy and it isn't even close. She's witty and smart, and her voice isn't annoying.

reply

I like both actresses, but for me Myrna Loy has no peer.

I enjoy watching Arthur in anything, she was a great comedienne.

Myrna Loy had IT, whatever that is. She could play anything, just remember "The Best Years of Our Lives." She could wisecrack better than anyone, was sophisticated, glamorous and lovely.

I liked this movie, it had great dialogue and it had the great William Powell.
