Wonderful line
SAM: You live in Italy, Mrs. Cortright?
EDITH: I live in Italy by the thousands, Mr. Dodsworth.

Wasn't the line something like "Do people live in Italy ?" and she answered "by the thousands" ? Been a while since I've seen it so I may well be wrong. but to me "I live in Italy by the thousands.. " doesn't seem to make sence.
Babe
Actually the lines went more like:
Sam "Do people live in Italy"
Edith "Well there are countless Italians."
Sam "I mean people like you."
Edith "I live in Italy by the thousands."
There are lots of brilliant lines in this film.
"Tessie" is the Royal Rooters rally cry.
"Tessie" is the tune they always sung.
Yes many great lines...
Fran- I hope I look as good as you when I get to your age....
Edith- You are almost cetain to....
so many more, most of them involving Mary Astor and/or Walter Huston. I know Mary is more famous for other movies, but she was perfection here...the final scene with a closeup of her beautiful face is fabulous...a great, great film!!
here's my fave
Fran: Do you think you'll ever get me out of your system?
Sam: Maybe not, but love has to stop some place short of suicide

Yep, my favourite is probably the previously mentioned exchange between Mary Astor (PRICELESS facial expressions here!!) and Chatterton.
shareWalter Huston makes my heart melt when he says, "Have I told you today how much I adore you?"
Especially at the end, when he's getting on the train to leave, knowing their relationship is probably over. Heartbreaking.
Ruth Chatterton as Fran Dodsworth to Kurt (Gregory Gaye) after meeting his scary mother, Maria Ouspenskaya: "You might have told me you weren't a free agent."
shareYeah, whole that scene with the duchess was astonishing. Clash of the titans.
shareWhen Fran realizes that Sam actually is leaving the ship and her, and asks what's to become of her, his reply: "I don't know, but you'll have to stop getting younger someday!" Way to go, right in the ego!
If you love a film where the "baddie" gets her comeuppance, this is it.
...One Nation, UNDER GOD...
The Baroness to Fran: "What happiness can there be for the old wife of a young husband?"
shareWasn't the Baroness something else, though?
When Kurt says that his mother wants them to postpone their marriage, she states firmly, "I did not say 'postpone'." She swung a heavy hammer!
...One Nation, UNDER GOD...
Its my fave line too ... so sad
shareThe scene with the Baroness was definitely a highlight. Kurt was so different from Sam, a strong man who would never have asked permission to do anything. I think Fran saw that -- too bad it didn't make a difference to her.

It truly is a wonderful movie, and a movie most people should see. It's a shame these days with all this hightech in your face crystal clear blue ray stuff, the last generation wont watch old movies , let alone the new generation. Its truly sad(they dont know what theyre missing), black and white and nostalgia make these movies so special. I mean cmon, if u havent seen Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell , u havent lived.. thanks for the reply.
Bette Davis forever.
I know; I saw it again last night and I started to cry, especially as his eyes fill up with tears for a wife who's too selfish and irresponsible to reciprocate the feeling, and the memory of what they once had.
share"Have I told you today how much I adore you?"

Sad, sweet line, beautifully underplayed by Walter Houston.
Soy 'un hijo de la playa'
Even after that spoiled witch had broken his heart completely, he STILL said that to her, as his train was pulling away. I think I'd have socked her one!
