Brilliant! Suspense, visual effects

Just enjoyed watching this on TMC. I had never heard of it, but then that's true for most movies.

Barrymore's acting (as well as a few costars, excepting Maureen O'Sullivan) was a fine thing to see.

The special effects were remarkably well done, and stand out among other movies made around that time, or since. You know how some movies have great special effects, but then, years later, you notice for the first time that the spaceship has the wrong color light on it, or you see a gorilla suit where, before, you only noticed gorilla?

This movie ain't like that.

It's the story that makes it worth watching.

Well, that, and laughing at some of the miserably acted supporting roles, like O'Sullivan's or the police detectives.

I saw this on tv the other night. Very good movie for it's time. I found the old lady to be very creepy too. Great movie!

I had only seen snippets from this movie beofre. Once I started to watch,I had to watch the whole thing, even though most of the story is farfetched and perhaps dated. This is a great movie for a 1930's production as you said. I also couldn't stop thinking about a Lon Chaney movie that had him disguised as an old women.

Lionel Barrymore was excellent in the lead, and the special effects were indeed well done.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

I just watched this and was writing about how incredible the effects were. The scene were the girl is climbing up on the dresser, I couldn't believe they made those giant pieces of furniture and they looked so good.
The work with the people shrunk down was startlingly good for the year of this film. It reminded me of the homunculus scene from the bride of Frankenstein which had me rewinding multiple times because it was so impressive.

I also loved this obscure, unknown to me, movie. The old "lady" reminded me of the old woman played by lon chaney,in The Unholy Three, also by Todd Browning.Very original, and very well made for the time...
