The judge's advice and the follow-up scene..

I was wondering if anybody though it was intentional that the scene following the one with the judge telling the boys to suck it up and do as their parents tell them has Jackie Cooper's character talking about his dad beating him more than usual because of the judge? I couldn't tell if the film was making a point contradicting the judge's black and white advice or not. In a modern film I'd assume it was intentional but in these moral code flicks I'm not so sure. Thanks for the input!
