Bogart's Best Bad Guy Role

I liked Bogie in this part. He was smart, ruthless and no coward. Except for the lack of squibs, his final shootout with EGR is like something from Taratino.

In "Angels With Dirty Faces" and "Roaring Twenties", Bogie did the same corny, quivering hands, begging for his life act just before Cagney guns him down.

Agreed. I really liked Bogart's bad guy here; he's as much a force of nature as Robinson, and the two actors complement each other very well. Plus Bogart smokes a mean cigarette; I am amazed how he got that smoke to curl around him in such a casually Mephistophelean way.

reply

In this and KID GALAHAD, Bogie is the aggressor in fatal gunfights with Edward G. Robinson, and is more convincing than he is begging for his life in the Cagney films.

reply

Yes, love the tension between him and Robinson.
