Where was Willie Best?

Willie Best is listed above Billy Gilbert and Hattie MacDaniels on the cast title card, who both had major scenes. Where was Willie? Was he cut out of the version of the film available today for PC reasons? Another comment here says he appears briefly during the courtroom scene, but spoke no lines. I didn't see him at all.

he is featured in a shot or two near the beginning, entering the marriage license office -- but says nothing.

Though he's only shown briefly, Willie Best is credited with a character name. We have to assume he had a bigger role but many of his scenes were edited out. It probably wasn't for PC reason though. If that were the case, most of the movies from that era would be chopped to pieces.

If they were going to sanitize the movie to make it more PC they would have also taken out the scene when Paul tells Mike to Carolyn to tell Mattie to pick his shirt up from the 'chinks'. There are also several occasions when Mike or someone else refers to beating his wife. It's not always said in jest.

I watch old movies to get a glimpse of how things were in those days. If they clean up the movie to make it fit today's ethics it ceases to represent the time in which it was made. I'm sure the PC police would love that but it would be wrong. Actors like Willie Best, actually most black actors of that day, would suddenly be cut out of film history because most of their movie roles would be considered degrading and un-PC today.

To take it one step further, this entire movie would be locked in a vault because it is very dated and chauvinistic. It's a stark look at life from where we sit but in the days in which it was made it was fairly benign. People were beginning to deal with these issues but, for the most part, most people accepted the conventions. It would be a shame for these movies to be lost to us.
