hey thanks for posting the link...it was a great article...I am a huge bogart fan... I just ordered and recieved the video from a private sellar at amazon...it is one of my favorite bogie films...I originally taped it off of TCM but when I moved to seattle and sent my box of videos through UPS, most of them got ruined by a magnet or something...so I am trying to replace them slowly...but alot of them are not on video..which is a big reason I love TCM so much becuase they show rare movies that are gems....thanks again for posting the link to the article on the real black legion...

. . . that's right! Thanks for the reminder of that. I originally read about this in the book "BOGIE", which is endorsed - and prefaced - by Lauren Bacall.(SP?) It's somewhere around my study-like room and is IMO THE definitive bio of Bogie.

~Thanks again for the reminder!

I saw young bogie last week in "Dead End" but I have to confess not only have I never seen this, I never even heard of it?

Bogie made a strong impact to audiences before High Sierra & The Maltese Falcon in 1941. His first major success was his stage & screen role of Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest in 1936 & in 1937 Dead End was another major hit for Bogie, adapted from the very successful broadway play by Sidney Kingsley in 1935. The same year Bogie was setting the broadway stage on fire stunning audiences as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest.

Black Legion is another significant film from 1936 & gave Bogie his first successful quality starring role in a major movie. It was Bogie's first release for 1937. It's a forgotten classic that doesn't get the attention it deserves. Black Legion needs to be seen & studied more considering this controversial movie made a strong impact in 1937.
