What was Danvers' incentive to lie?

Was she paid off ? The film never makes this clear...why does she testify so willingly in the courtroom?

Odds are the Black Legion paid a visit to her house.

I hope the filmmakers didn't expect us to believe it was to be vindictive towards Ed Jackson and his surviving fiancé.

What I'd like to know is, who is the actress who played Mrs. Danvers? Her character doesn't seem to be listed in the credits.

Helen Flint according to Wikipedia.
After I posted this I caught her name in the goofs and again in the soundtrack credits. Her character is incorrectly listed as Pearl Davis in the cast list.
