The problem was not the accent

One can complain about Miss Bergner's German accent but I think that the real problem was she couldn't say the lines in a normal rhythm! She seems to think every word she's saying. If the actress who plays the cousin Celia had played Rosalind it would have been a very enjoyable movie!

The rest of the cast were, so far as I know, professional British actors who followed the traditions of their country. Giving the most important role to a woman from Germany added, to my mind, an extra dimension. With her exotic appearance and accent, she threw such life into the part! Personally, I enjoyed the way she spoke every line. After all, for much of the time she is pretending to be a bloke, so I think it helps if the delivery is slightly artificial.

Her accent was fine, she was just from a different style of acting. English actors had a more naturalistic reading of Shakespeare. I've never understood why people are so taken with Bergner, not that she is horrible.
