Bizarre Movie

I saw this on cable television with a friend in the late 80's, early 90's? I don't remember too much about it other than the whole thing was weird and disturbing - Nobody looked good, and there were all these weird bits and subplots.

Something with Ethel Merman and Bing Crosby rubber cementing dog whiskers on their face, and singing? Then the filmstrip segment was edited so that they were going "Ah-woof, Ah-woof, Ah-woof" over and over and over again, moving their heads from left to right. Really bizarre.

The title was "Tops Is The Limit"...but I remember it as being done in a 1930's style...Like that was the title of its original release, not something cooked up for cable, as in the IMDB description.

What a creepy title. What does it mean, and where on earth did they get it from. Really weird.

After seeing the movie, my friend and I would sing to eachother:

"In olden days a glimpse of stocking
was looked on as something shocking,
but now heaven knows...
TOPS IS THE LIMIT!!"

And then we would roll with laughter.

Maybe this had something to do with the rights to the show - in that Hollywood did such a hatchet job of it the writers refused to let them call it "Anything Goes".

It was nearly 20 years ago that I saw this, so my memories are somewhat faded (except for that dog-whisker scene which will haunt me the rest of my life).

I just remember being repulsed by this movie!!

Poor Ethel!
