Jimmy Stewart as Murderer!!!!! albeit insane. Did he ever play a villain in any other movie??????

reply

I don't know about "villain," but he's definitely not a straight character in "Anatomy of a Murder."

reply

Paul Biegler was a much different character in the book Anatomy... than the movie.
Stewart played some unlikeable people in his career. Maj. Baldwin in The Mountain Road comes to mind.

---Spoiler Alert------

Jimmy Stewart also played a murderer in "The Greatest Show on Earth." We never see the murder in that one. He committed the murder before joining the circus and is never seen without his clown make-up. Whether or not he is a "bad guy" is debatable because he reveals himself in order to save a life.

Young love-crazed Jimmy Stewart is hilarious.

I am a big James Stewart fan. After The Thin Man was excellent but not for James Stewart. He was the baddie in Rose Marie (a movie I hated), and he was certainly not nice in Bandolero, Of Human Hearts, The Naked Spur and No Time For Comedy ( the worst film of his career (Rose Marie included)). If you make a list of the worst James Stewart films ( there are about six or seven I have not seen), the ones where he was not nice were some of the worst of his career ( The Naked Spur was a classic and the exception). I would add Fools Parade and Pot O Gold to the worst film list. I do hate musicals so putting Rose Marie and Pot O Gold are easy choices for me

Good for you not putting a big ol' "SPOILER" tag on this post. Surprise endings are overrated anyway.

reply

Completely disagree. My friends who see this movie and are surprised he's the killer really enjoy the surprise.

reply

Damn! I've forgotten the "sarc/" tag again.

reply

Should there be a statute of limitations for spoilers? Maybe an eighty-year-old movie would fall outside it.
