Mobster in the 30's....

Were mighty nice. Mannion is nicely talking to Jones about how they will split the passport the D.A. Gave him. " I'm going to use it at night and you are going to use it during the day" :) and he actually comes back to Jonsey apartment in the morning, gives him the passport back and says " now, shove off" getting comfortable to sleep the day off I'm Jones's apartment. Edward G Robinson as Jones is amazing. Fell in love with his character. You gotta love this movie. I know I do.

I wondered about the logic of this too, at first. Why wouldn't Mannion kill Jones and just keep the pass for himself? If he killed Jones, he'd have to either go around inhabiting his life; doing the things Jones usually does (1) or quickly leave town (2); or both.

1: He doesn't really know Jones' routine, how to do his job, or the people he knows. He'd have trouble fooling all the people who knew Jones. Even if he could fool them, why would he want to live Jones' dull little life? For a criminal like Mannion, that would be torture.

2: Whether or not he killed Jones, if he left town the 'pass' probably wouldn't get him very far. With Jones missing, the police would probably go looking for him and Mannion. Mannion was the only one who really had an interest in harming him. If Jones was still alive he wouldn't have an alibi. The first bank he robbed, and he would rob a bank, they'd know he did it because Jones would be living his life in that town. The pass would be useless.

In either case, what kind of stupid thing is that to give someone a pass saying they're not the criminal then let it be known and published in the newspaper? Also, why wouldn't Jones go to the police? Mannion said he or his thugs would kill him but he would have suspected they'd kill him eventually. No one around him was safe either.

Going to the police, they could set a trap by giving him a second note with a slight alteration. When Jones went out at night he would be easily caught then they could round up his thugs as well.

This is a rather long winded way of saying the movie didn't really work for me. I wanted to like it but there too many unexplained plot holes.
