Question

A Tale of Two Cities is my favorite book...would this movie "ruin" it for me? Or is it good?

While it may be different for me, as A Tale of Two Cities is not my favorite book, this movie is extremely well-done. Very much a classic example of old-school filmmaking. And Ronald Colman as Sydney Carton literally makes me weep. I'm actually using the word "weep" here - in a good cathartic way - as one would when something is so well done and touching. I'll admit I'm a chick, and have a bias towards Colman (based on this film alone), but I don't ever really cry from movies. But this one just breaks me. Colman was born for this role. I can't say anything bad about this film. And the book's pretty good, too. That Dickens sure writes purty.

It's my favorite book, too, and I've seen just about every movie that was ever made of it and the 1935 movie is the best. The writers used some of Dickens's dialogue straight from the book when making the movie and if you've read the book closely enough you can tell when this was done while watching the movie. So, if anything, it should make the movie more enjoyable for you--not "ruin" it.
