Ronald Coleman's Hair

I'm wondering why his hair always looked sopping wet? Was it somehow decided his character would look less like a gentleman, someone who didn't care about his personal hygiene? The peasants hair looked cleaner. He falls in love after he goes to Christmas mass, but his appearance doesn't change. I don't get what the director was after. I'm going to read the book now, maybe I'll understand after.
