DVD?

Anyone know if there is any plan to put Ruggles of Red Gap out on DVD?

reply

I haven't been able to find it. Is it on VHS? I've also been trying to find Centennial on DVD.

reply

I just watched Ruggles on VHS last night for the umpteenth time, and wondered if it was on DVD.

Paramount Studios originally held the rights to this film. It's possible that if enough people request this movie, they may place it on DVD. Worth a try.

You are right, a strong letter writing campaign is necessary. However, don't waste your time writing to Paramount. They long long ago sold all the rights to 770 of their old movies to MCI/Universal who now owns the movies in perpetuity. (Remember the turning MCI Triangle Logo, with that funny sound, that used to precede the familiar Paramount Logo as recently as the 1970's and 1980's?) Getting Universal to release titles with the Paramount logo is not an easy thing to do. It happens from time to time but they would much rather have Universal Pictures "floating around in the public pool." The only thing that could change this is if Paramount buys Universal. This sort of thing is not without precedent - that is what happened when Warner Bros. bought Turner, for the express purpose of getting the Warner Bros' library back. (As you probably remember, Jack Warner sold those film rights decades ago when he was still alive and needed cash). One of the only ways to get to see some of these movies is to buy old 16mm prints outright. I know, I have been doing just that for years and years myself. So, AS CRAZY AS IT SOUNDS, IF YOU WANT TO SEE OLD PARAMOUNT MOVIES, BEG UNIVERSAL TO RELEASE THEM. And don't get your hopes too high.

Ruggles is available on DVD from Hong Kong. Check out ebay as you will be able to purchase it for around $10.

reply

Try www.efilmic.com. They do an all-regions edition for $16.99.

I am sure that Ruggles' must be out on DVD because my Art Appreciation Class has used it and the teacher only uses DVDs in the classroom.
I hope you find your copy quickly!

It could have been a Burn.

You can rent a DVD transfer made from the VHS tape from SilverScreenArchive.com, but it has some tracking problems.
