What happened to Minnie in movie?

Was there ever an explanation? She seemed to be kind of working her way back into John's heart -- then she was just gone? Or did I fall asleep; I was a little bored but curious.

You must have fallen asleep or walked out the room in a key moment - Minnie was ill throughout the story, remember she was under doctor's orders to rest mid-day. At one point, she was obviously feeling particularly bad, lied down on the sofa for her nap and Irene sang her a song to get her in a sleepy mood. Minnie fell asleep and Irene left the room, a moment later Minnie's hand dropped, indicating she had passed away. The next scene shows newspaper headlines announcing her death. John inherited the business from her and persuaded Irene to stay and help him run it. Though I confess I don't understand your comment that (Minnie) "seemed to be kind of working her way back into John's heart" - Minnie was always crazy about her nephew John and vice versa. Are you perhaps referring to John's snooty girlfriend from the states? If so that's another story LOL and I'd have to post "what happened" to her.

Good answer!

John's snooty other lady, Sophie, also exits abruptly, but perhaps the reason for Minnie's exit would be to hand the shoppe over to John, to ignite the flame with Stephania, to cause friction when Sophie arrives, further fueled by Huck, who really needs Tanka Swarinka to show him the ropes, or at least until John becomes jealous of Ladislav.

Such a fine cast adds a lot to this classic, and Mr. Louie Louie certainly ices the cake with his reactions around the finely tuned nightclub.
